Be a Hazard Hero! - Help identify and minimize hazards.
As part of North Carolina’s Injury Prevention Hazard Recognition Program, we want all Appalachian faculty, staff, and students to identify and report safety hazards in the workplace and around campus, wherever they are found. As a Hazard Hero, finding and reporting unsafe conditions and other hazards will help keep our campus safe.
Be a Hazard Hero. Click here to report a hazard.
This program is designed to assist you in reporting safety concerns and hazards. Simply complete the short form above and click the SUBMIT button at the bottom of the form. Your report will go directly to EHS&EM personnel for review and follow-up. If you have questions, please feel free to contact our office by email (safety@appstate.edu) or by phone at 828-262-4008.

Welcome to Appalachian’s Office of Environmental Health, Safety, and Emergency Management (EHS&EM). We are committed to providing a healthy and safe campus environment for all faculty, staff, students, and visitors. Our mission is to promote healthy, safe, and resilient operations on campus, to protect students, faculty, staff and visitors, and to protect the environment. Our vision is to increase resiliency and preserve the Appalachian mission as a recognized campus leader and resource for environmental health, safety, and emergency management. Our office is committed to the following values in all that we do:
- Accountability
- Leadership
- Collaboration
- Stewardship and Compliance
- Open Communication
Our professional staff provides training, area assessments, inspections, and reports that support all university departments while reducing institutional liability and risk. While the University must comply with the expectations of numerous governing and regulatory agencies, we believe that we can find compliance while placing people and environment first. The people and environment model enables us to look at the root cause of risk and recommend or require appropriate controls rather than simply seeking to reach code compliance. Code compliance is often the result of thinking more and managing or reducing risk. We also maintain a people and environment first model to our emergency preparedness and management programs.
Whether you work with EHS&EM regularly, or have never met any of our team, we hope that we can help you take the lead in your area. Please take some time to explore our site, ask questions, and let us know if you need anything at any time. If you would like to visit EHS&EM’s emergency preparedness page, please click here.
Together, as a university, we can think more to risk less.
